PERSONAL/ Happy (belated) Valentine's!

Even though I normally don't pay any attention to Valentine's Day whatsoever (I think it's too cheesy), it has some meaning for me today - since my boyfriend is currently residing on the other side of the world, while I'm staying in New York City!

I arrived at JFK Airport the day before yesterday, somewhere in the afternoon, and I went straight to my cousin Rémy's apartment in Brooklyn - where I'll be staying for the next two months. I'm already missing Philou like hell and I hope we can find one way or another to let him come over here during those two months. Tomorrow, I'm going into Manhattan, I hope I'll find the time to shoot some pictures (I probably will) so I'll catch up with you guys later!

BEAUTY/ My hair got a cut

Went to the hairdresser's today and cut off quite some centimeters! In the past two years, I truly mutilated my own hair; had Balmain extensions that I let in too long (in the end, it looked like there was a big bush of pubic hair on my head), then dyed my hair black several times, then bleached it and dyed it red, later on a reddish-brown color and even took some dreadlocks while I was in Africa. The result was that my hair was pretty darn dead so this was needed!

I am currently packing my stuff and organizing everything before I'm flying to New York on Monday; the actual date is coming closer and closer and I am getting more and more nervous.. And I shouldn't forget to mention excited!

FASHION WEEK/ 'Gestuz' at Amsterdam Fashion Week

This post isn't written by Charlotte, Tiffany or Rosa, but by me, Janine. Don't worry, I'm not another new blogger for Flower Children, this blogpost is just a guest apperance. Since Charlotte and Tiffany weren't able to attend Amsterdam Fashion Week on Saturday, Charlotte asked me if I would like to go. It took me about a second to respond to that question with a 'hell to the yes!'

So I went to see the show of this Danish brand called Gestuz. The designers of this collection were inspired by nature and that resulted in earth tone colors,a lot of rough leather, wool and silk. Although the mix of soft and rough elements isn't really innovative, I really loved the collection thanks to the leather, the workerboots, the sequins, the denim and the fact that it was really wearable for a change.

NEW BUYS/ Another pair of brogues

While shopping with Tiff in Amsterdam last week, I found these at probably Amsterdam's most famous vintage store; Episode. I already had a similar pair of vintage brogues, but I can always find a good excuse for buying yet another pair of shoes; these ones have tassels on them, I mean, how was I supposed to say no?! For the ones that are curious; the scenery shows my parents' living room.

I'm leaving for New York in ten effin' days. I am so excited, yet a little sad at the same time. My boyfriend Philou and I just started realizing how long we're going to be without each other, which might sound corny, but we have never been apart longer than a week. Still, there are butterflies in my tummy, so excited to drive off to the airport - good thing that he will be there, together with my parents, to say goodbye. I'll keep you updated!

PERSONAL/ Help onze Afrikaanse vriend Wayne

This message is about a good cause for our Dutch readers only, hence the non-English part!

Weten jullie nog dat ik afgelopen zomer met m'n vriendje Philou naar Malawi ben geweest, om vrijwilligerswerk te doen daar gedurende een maand? Ik kan vanuit de grond van m'n hart zeggen dat die reis me op alle fronten enorm heeft geraakt, en ook veranderd. Ik ben volledig met m'n neus op de feiten gedrukt, en heb ingezien dat de meeste 'problemen' die ik hier tegenkom in mijn alledaagse leven, eerstewereld-problemen zijn en ik zo weinig reden heb tot klagen over wat dan ook.

En hoe cliché het ook mag klinken - de mensen daar zijn een stuk gelukkiger, afgezien van het feit dat ze bijna niets hebben. Philou en ik hebben er één vriend gemaakt die we echt in ons hart gesloten hebben, Wayne, een jongen van begin twintig jaar. Hij werkte bij de organisatie waar wij vrijwilligers werden, 'Hope For Life', een organisatie die probeert HIV/aids in de community uit te roeien. Ook nu spreken we hem nog vaak. Eén keer in de week loopt hij kilometers lang naar de dichtstbijzijnde stad Zomba, om daar vervolgens naar een internet café te gaan, waar hij dan een groot deel van zijn inkomsten spendeert aan het sturen van een facebook berichtje naar Philou en mij.

Wayne woont nog bij zijn moeder en zit momenteel krap bij kas, zelfs naar Afrikaanse maatstaven. Hij is een tijd ziek geweest en heeft daardoor o.a. niet kunnen werken. Philou en ik proberen hem nu te helpen bij het vinden van een extra bron aan inkomen, en we denken dat we dat hebben gevonden; Wayne maakt zelf typisch Afrikaanse armbandjes, stuurt die vervolgens naar mij toe, ik verkoop ze aan vrienden en familie in Nederland en zorg ervoor dat het geld terug bij Wayne belandt. Wayne komt ongeveer rond van omgerekend 1/2 euro per dag, net als zijn moeder. Daarom verkoop ik ieder armbandje voor 5 euro, zodat Wayne zo lang mogelijk van het geld rond kan komen.

A few outfit shots that we took on the first actual day of Fashion Week, on which we only attended a little FW downtown event, which was fun nevertheless! This outfit might not be very original, since I've worn it in the past (click to see the outfit post), only with other shoes - but I just feel very comfortable in this and I felt as if the creepers went well with it! PERSONAL/ Metro x Karl Lagerfeld finalist!

Remember this post?

A while ago, I came across this contest on the internet. Newspaper Metro had organized it together with Karl Lagerfeld, to celebrate Karl being the guest editor-in-chief of Metro of the 7th of February. I decided to participate and uploaded my looks on the Metro x Karl Lagerfeld website, where people could vote on your looks.

I asked our followers here and the followers I gathered on my tumblr over the years to vote for me, and you/they did! In a few weeks, I had a couple of hundred votes on each of my looks (you guys are the best!). In my previous post about this matter, I told you the following thing;

"The thing they asked you to do, was upload some of your looks to the Metro x Karl website, where people can vote for your looks. Out of every country, the person with the most votes will be picked. After that, Karl personally will choose one of these people to be his assistent for a couple of days, in Paris."

It turns out I was wrong and hadn't understood the rules of the contest completely! Out of every country, the ten people with the most votes would be picked. And that means that I am one of the finalists in this contest! One of my followers on Twitter, named Lindi, tweeted me with this picture she had taken of a certain Metro edition, published a couple of days ago. I woke up, read this tweet and became so psyched! Being a finalist means that Karl Lagerfeld and his team will personally choose the winner out of all of the global finalists - so no more voting is involved.

I don't expect to win at all (there must a be a pretty big bunch of finalists, due to the fact that this contest is global), but being a finalist is a huge honor already and I wanted to take this opportunity to thank all of you for voting! I will probably hear who the winner is on the 2nd of February - and of course, I'll keep you updated! Check out all of the Dutch finalists here (click).

On the 25th of January, the first day of the Amsterdam Fashion Week, Charlotte and I headed over to Amsterdam to do some shopping. We didn't have any invites to the actual official shows that particular day, but we did intend to have a look at a particular part of the fashion week downtown programme; the Jutka & Riska show. We arrived too early to watch the fashion show that would come with it - but we did take some pictures of the little vintage shop area Jutka & Riska organized (photos will follow later!).

Yesterday, I celebrated my 20th birthday at home - and went to dinner to the nicest little restaurant in a town nearby, with my parents, little sister, her best friend and my boyfriend. I'm not that big of a party animal (contrary to my boyfriend), think I'm going to re-celebrate it by chilling and have some cake with a few friends.

I never really cared that much about birthdays, but there's something magical about turning 20! I'm not a teenager anymore and suddenly I feel as if I need to live up to bigger expectations, which of course is bullshit and doesn't make any sense - but I can't help the way I feel, right?!

I currently am fixing everything that still needs to be fixed, before I'm heading off to New York mid February. I am so excited already, but also extremely nervous. This is yet another chapter of my life, in which I'm basically standing on my own. I can now reveal some more details about my New York adventure; I'm going to live together with my Canadian niece Rémy and her boyfriend (I have a lot of family living in the U.S.A. and Canada). She's studying 'advertising' at the Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC and I'll be living in her apartment that's right next to the Brooklyn Bridge, so pretty darn close to Manhattan! PERSONAL/ Recap of 2011

Can't believe how fast 2011 went by. I'm getting old (read; I'm leaving my teenage years this month). 2011 has been good to me overall, and also for the blog!

I turned 19 in January 2011, then went to Amsterdam International Fashion Week at the end of January, where I attended a few shows and met up with fellow bloggers (which is probably the thing I enjoy most about these events). I then celebrated my 1-year anniversary with my boyfriend Philou in the beginning of February, but after this came the first 'down' of my year; my friendship with Adrienne was broken off, whom I had also been sharing the blog with (the name of our blog was still 'Two Peas In A Pod' back then); a pretty rough period followed. My attention had to be divided between my friends, the boyfriend, the blog and school then; I would be graduating from high school that Summer and school was so time consuming.

But in the end all of the drama and endless studying was worth it; I graduated, and with some pretty good grades as well. During the ceremony at school, I also did a speech, to which I got so much positive feedback. In August, I could celebrate this little triumph at Amsterdam International Fashion Week again. Charlotte Kan, the Rotterdam-based desiger, asked me and a few other bloggers to be her model at her show. I obliged, of course - happily.

About two weeks later, at the end of August, I took off to Malawi, Africa, together with the boyfriend. We had decided to work as volunteers with people suffering from HIV/Aids, in Zomba - the former capital of Malawi. As you might have read on here before, I fell crazily in love with Africa and its people (see the post below this one, as well). I promised myself to go back there as soon as possible. Visiting Africa really put some things in perspective for me, and I truly recommend everyone to do something similar to this.

I had decided to not attend college immediately after graduating. I wanted to work/travel for a year first, so that's when I started working as a waitress slash bartender in my little hometown. My parents took me and my sister on a holiday to the Canary Islands in September, which I enjoyed so much. Family vacations will always be fun.

And then, when I came back, I asked Rosa and Tiffany to join me on the blog. They both said yes, and I couldn't be any happier. These girls are the sweetest, not to mention their fashion sense kicks ass. We changed the name to 'Flower Children', and here we are; it's January 2012, and we're entering a new era for the blog. Thanks to our readers for continuously supporting us, you make it all worth it.

Do you remember when I went to Malawi last Summer, together with Philou? We worked as volunteers for a month, with the Dutch organization 'Be More'. I recently pulled my creepers out of my closet again. Even though I'm obsessed with their ugliness, I find it hard to incorporate them in my outfits. Creepers are pretty outstanding, and leopard-printed creepers attract even more attention. But in the end, I think they look pretty cool in this ensemble. I decided I'll get a black pair of creepers as well - the classics. I have periods in which I'm wearing heels from time to time, but my feet hurt like hell everytime I do so, which is why I prefer these monsters; they give you a little of that extra height (not that I need any more height with my 1.83m, but whatevs) and still are easy to walk on.

What are your opinions on creepers?

PERSONAL/ I'm taking a break

You all probably already noticed I wasn't updating that much lately. From the three of us, mainly Charlotte wrote all the updates, and must admit I enjoy reading your updates, Lottie, even though I know you personally and the information isn't new to me. I absolutely love making outfit posts, collecting pictures on tumblr to outline my wishlist and for example discovering new kind of styles. But at the moment this stuff takes too much energy due to personal reasons. I will not explain this in detail, but I'm having a really hard time and I need to really work on myself. In fact, I'm not able to update at the moment, and I hate to admit this because I just started blogging. I hope, when I'm back I'll be full of energy so I can blog until my arms fall off. Not literally.

I am really sorry to tell you this, but fortunately Charlotte and Tiffany will keep on blogging :) Maybe I'll make a little update every now and then, let's hope for the best. And before I forget; Merry Christmas!

Ever since I saw this trend coming up about a year ago in Tumblr, I have secretly been obsessed with crazy colored hair; especially pastel colors. Model Charlotte Free (oh, what's in a name) hugely contributed to this, with her pink hair.

Ever since I was little, I've had the same haircut for years; long brown/black hair, with a fringe. As you know, I dyed it red some time ago but I'm up for a bigger change; I will dye it lilac. After weeks of looking for a hairdresser who was willing to participate in this, I finally found one - in my hometown (for God's sake). I don't know when this will get done (funky colored hair might be a problem for me, working as a waitress), but it will definitely be before I get my ass over to New York in February.

PERSONAL/ Moving to N.Y.C. for two months

Ever since I visited New York City for the first (and only, for that matter) time, I fell in love with it. I can honestly say that the thing that makes me the happiest girl in the world (apart from being with Philou), is being in one of the following two places; either Malawi, or New York. Africa and the big apple are each other's opposites - nevertheless, I could never make a choice between the two of them.

Since I went to Africa last Summer, it has gotten under my skin. I think about Malawi and all the people I met at least five times a day and I miss it so incredibly much. My boyfriend and I will try to get back to Africa as soon as possible, which will most likely be next Summer - when he has graduated, and right before I start going to school again.

But New York... New York is harder to go back to, due to the enormous pile of money you need - when you want to stay there for a longer amount of time. I figured that, by the time I'll have graduated from college, I could go there again, but I did not want to wait that long. And that's why I decided to live in New York (Brooklyn, to be more exact) from mid February till the midst of April. My parents will stand by me emotionally as well as financially. They won't pay for the entire trip, but I can lend the money from them and start paying them back in phases. I'm currently fixing a place to stay (almost fixed) and an internship. I'll let you know everything about the progress I'm making - so stay tuned!

The weather was terrible yesterday and so the Weather Gods forbid Tiffany and me to take pictures outside. We then found an alternative location in my boyfriend's appartment; the hallway. Not the most ideal spot, but you gotta work with what you've got. I recently re-found this H&M sweater in my closet by working my way through it. Maybe that's a thing I should do more often?!

My boyfriend is an addict to Instagram - a glorified app for the iPhone, and I mostly am the target captured in his photos. OK, I'll admit; I am craving for an iPhone, even though my boyfriend and I have been in a war for two years, where he was representing team iPhone and I was team BlackBerry. I recently found out you can also view Instagram on the world wide web as well, which is handy for me since I don't own an iPhone (yet). You can view his account here (click).

Some other announcements, two to be exact; sorry for the lack of outfit posts, I know you guys like those the most. Tiffany and I'll find a location to shoot coming Wednesday, so just hold on a little longer. Due to personal reasons, Rosa has been too occupied to post regularly; which I completely understand. Hi sweethearts, just wanted to let you know that I re-arranged my Lookbook account a little (on which I hadn't been active for over a year), and I posted one of my latest looks. EVENTS/ Relaunch of NSMBL

Somewhere last week, my friend Roxy and I attended the official relaunch of online magazine NSMBL.nl. NSMBL has already been out there for about half a year, but they drastically changed the design of their website - good reason for a party, right? Met up with some other bloggers, ate cupcakes and drank a little too much wine. Also, I finally had a longer chat with Laura from 'The World Looks Red'. She's the sweetest and I'm such a big fan of her blog.

Up till this point, all of the posts I wrote, were orientated on fashion for the female half of our world. But over the past two years of my boyfriend and me being together, he has become one of my biggest style icons. I love borrowing (... stealing would be a better word) his clothes and not just when I need something to sleep in. Anyway, I don't really know if he appreciates me stealing his shirts every now and then, all too much - my boobs are... ehrm.. slightly bigger than his (I have a D-cup and I absolutely hate it) and you can imagine what that might do to some of his tees. Sorry, babe.

PERSONAL/ Looking for a new blog-name

When I first started this blog, somewhere back in 2009, I named it 'vinnie in furs'. My old group of friends used to call me 'Vinnie', due to the fact that I always wore so much vintage clothing. One time, I was wearing this faux fur coat to school when one of my friends say; 'Furry Vinnie!' That was when the original idea for the name came up. 'Furry Vinnie' quickly turned into 'vinnie in furs' ('Venus In Furs' is one of my favourite songs by the band The Velvet Underground).

Somewhere in October 2010, Adrienne joined me on the blog. We had been best friends since we were twelve years old, and our clothing styles were very similar, so one thing quickly turned into another. 'two peas in a pod' was born. I experienced the benefits of blogging with one of your friends; events were more exciting to attend, more blogposts were being prepared (and due to that, visitor ratings went up) and in general, it was just more fun. Around February 2011, our friendship was ended by me, due to personal reasons.

I was now blogging on my own again - but to be completely honest, I didn't enjoy it as much as I used to do. I kept the name 'two peas in a pod', since that name had gathered a little fame in the Dutch blogging world. But of course, it was odd - 'two peas in a pod' doesn't suit a blog, written by only one girl. I then started looking throughout my group of friends who'd enjoy blogging together with me... And I ended up with both Rosa and Tiffany!

As of now, in November 2011, there are three of us blogging. 'two peas in a pod' doesn't suit our blog anymore, since the number of bloggers is larger than two. Therefore, we are looking for a new name for the blog. My boyfriend Philou, was willing to make a new header for our blog (because on the previous one, only Rosa and I were featured). I quickly had to come up with a new, temporary name for the blog, which has become; 'flowerchildren'. Back in the 1960's, hippies were often called flowerchildren. I like the sound of the word, and the fact that all three of us have some hippie elements gathered in our personal styles.

However, I do not know if this name will be permanent. We're still discussing the whole matter and when we come up with a new, final name, you'll be the first to know. Thanks for reading and stay tuned,

Showing you my new Zara tutu again - I love it. I added the Guns N' Roses tee to my outfit, 'cause I like to put a little edge to my outfits. I'm girly, but on a scale from 1 to 10, I wouldn't at all reach a 10. The shoes were killing me, by the way. They're vintage and I love their masculine look, but after wearing them an entire day long I had about five blisters.

I'm planning on cleaning a big part of my closet tomorrow. Not looking forward to it at all, but the job has to be done! Wish me luck.

A few days ago, I posted a tweet saying someone else would join us on the blog. Now it's time for you to meet her!

Meet Tiffany. She's currently 22 years old, lives near Rotterdam, is attending the 'Fotovakschool' (a well-known school in Holland for photography courses), and part of her studies will involve her interning at VICE magazine in a short amount of time. She has a boyfriend, and works at the Coffee Company part-time! I met Tiffany through my boyfriend Philou - he and she were (correction, ARE) part of the same group of friends - and we instantly got along.

Although Rosa and Tiffany never even met, I'm sure they will like each other. Both are such sweet-natured girls. All of us have our own, personal styles - but I think they're pretty much in the same range. Next week I'll meet with Tiff - explain her all about the blogging kind of ways, and after that it'll be time for her to properly introduce herself on here! Until then, stay tuned!

The day before yesterday, Rosa and I went to Utrecht to attend the opening of the XL Sacha store with a bunch of other bloggers. Eating free food and trying on some shoes is always a good combination. The fact that there also was a MAC make-up artist available to paint our faces, made attending even more appealing, and so we went to Utrecht! We took an overload of pictures, so this is only part I - part II is coming up tomorrow evening.

PERSONAL/ Mother and daughter day

I've been very busy this week, I had an important deadline last Friday for school, thank god it's done now. Today, I went shopping with my mom. We haven't done that in quite a long time. She's busy with starting her own company, I'm busy with school so today was kind of an exception. I bought a t-shirt, a new bra, jogging pants to wear at home. I love wearing comfy clothes at home. And some parfume, all from H&M. Most of the time, perfume from H&M smells like sweet shit, sugarwater, way too sweet - but I really like this one! I made pictures of them but they won't open, so tomorrow I'll try it again. So I have only these two pictures with my new pants, which you can hardly see, and the t-shirt, both from H&M.

Tomorrow I'm going to see Lotte again, finally. We haven't seen each other in almost half a year? Time goes by way too fast. We're going to join the opening of a new Sacha branch in Utrecht. I'll take my camera with me so I'll update with lots of photo's!

And here's part II of my vacation photos! Our family is always quite active on holidays, even when the sun is shining as hard as it was in Fuerteventura, so we did all kinds of things - took a tour around the island, went snorkling - etc.

As I had so little time to pack my suitcase (I kept postponing it), I just threw all of the clothes that I also brought to Africa on top of each other and went off to the airport. I had a blast, even though I'm more of a 'wintery' kind of person. Yes, that's right, I thoroughly enjoy snow and temperatures below zero. Call me crazy!

Rumor had it, that up to 90% of the original prices would be off, but unfortunately, that was not the case at all. Even so, I found some nice pieces of good quality (3 in total) for which I paid about 90 euros all together. NEW BUYS/ It's getting pretty dark

Last week my babies arrived, I couldn't be any happier. I admire them, but I don't dare to wear them. I am so extremely long with those wedges on. I shouldn't complain about my length, Lotte is even longer than I am and I think it suits her very well. It's just like, everyone stares at you when you wear high heels. It's not that I don't like attention, but, yeah, I should wear them. They are very comfortable because the heel isn't really that high, it's a lot of plateau. The heel is made of a very light material.

This weekend there will be an huuuuuge sale in 'De Westergasfabriek' in Amsterdam with American Apparel. Up to 90% off, so I'm defenitely going with some friends. To all the Dutch visitors; who's joining us?

I had a very busy weekend, unfortunately, so I couldn't really enjoy the weather. Normally I disgust winter, but now I think it's kinda cosy, I'm looking forward to all the snow, when entire Amsterdam is white. Let's forget about the rain and the time when the snow begins to melt and the entire city turns into a grey and sad world. Today I went for a quick walk with my lovely sister, Luca, to shoot some pictures. So; thank you sissy! Tomorrow I'm having two exams, one in biology and one in maths so I'll be locked inside my room this evening, at least I'm trying to learn. I'll fail anyway, haha.

NEW FINDS/ Antwerp

Hi loves,

Et voila, my first post, and I didn't even introduce myself yet. I find it very hard to "explain" myself to others so I asked Lotte to interview me. We will publish the interview somewhere down this week. Anyway, I just had to share this: I spontaneously decided to go to Antwerp with a friend of mine for some shopping. Especially for Urban Outfitters, such a pity they aren't located in the Netherlands. Luckily we've got one in Antwerp, but now I'm a broke poor girl. By the way, here are some pictures I made today of my new babies.

BEAUTY/ Make your bitten nails prettier

Ever since I was a teeny-tiny girl and my teeth started appearing, I have been biting my nails. It's probably one of my baddest habits, and I tried literally everything to stop it, but nothing would work. Every time I start getting nervous for whatever reason, I bite my nails - and since I'm such a neurotic asshole, I'm basically nervous all the time.

I'm pretty ashamed of my own hands. My boyfriend was making fun of my 'boyish little hands' the entire time, and since I'm now working as a waitress, the shame became worse. What was there to do about it?!

Then, about two weeks ago, my friend Roxy asked me if she could put acrylic nails on my own disgusting nails. I obliged, naturally.. She did such a good job; I was hooked from the minute I saw the final result. When I got home that week, I tried to put them on myself - and believe me, it is so easy. This is the perfect solution to biting nails, since I now can't reach for my own nails either; they're completely covered.

4 steps;
1. Buy some acrylic nails at your local pharmacist.
2. Find the right size for your nails and put them on your natural nails with the glue attached in the package.
3. Then file your nails, until they are the length you want them to be (I make them relatively short).
4. Put some nailpolish on them, and they look completely natural.

Hi guys! I have some exciting news for you to share.

I started this blog with the name 'vinnie in furs', a few years ago. After a while, I started sharing it with Adrienne - we changed the name to 'two peas in a pod', which then stopped for personal reasons. I then continued to blog for several months on my own, but I must say; I prefer blogging with a partner-in-crime. It's more fun, there's more updates, attending events with your best friend - only advantages, in my opinion.

That is why I asked one of my best friends, Rosa Maria, to come share 'two peas in a pod' with me. I've known her for about four years, and even though I don't get to see her often enough due to the fact that she lives on the other side of the country (in Amsterdam), we've remained friends throughout that time.

Her style can be described as simple, sophisticated chic, but always with an edgy twist. She'll introduce herself here somewhere next week. Until then, I have these pictures for you. Meet Rosa!

Got my ass over to my hairdresser once again, to give my hair a nicer color. The darkish shade of red had faded so much that my hair looked brown again. Now it's a really bright shade of red! D'you like it?

Again, an outfit post involving polkadots. I was going through my last polkadot phase when I was about 12/13 years old, but it came back, all over again. I found this dress a while ago at H&M pink label and it has become one of my favourites.

Another thing I wanted to tell you; as most of you know, I decided to take a year off after I finished high school in July this year. I've gone to Africa a month, and I'm working full-time now. I'm still struggling with adjusting to the Dutch lifestyle again, as weird as that may sound, but I don't mind going to work, since I have this one goal right now that I'm saving money for. At the end of January 2012, I'm leaving for New York City for three months. During February, March and April 2012, I'll be a NYC-resident. I cannot wait; ever since I visited the city for the first (and only) time, I've been wishing to go back. And this is the perfect time - I'm so happy with the fact that I decided to take a year off. This is a huge learning process for me...

I decided to shoot some outfit-pictures with my little sister today. When I was in Malawi, this rastafari guy put about 6/7 dreadlocks in my hair - only one is remaining. If you look closely, you might spot it in the fist picture. I might get some new ones really soon, but I'm first going to my hairdresser to get my hair dyed red again (I know, the black is coming through again!). The earrings I'm wearing were handmade in Malawi, as well as the necklace. I love wearing my African jewelry, in that way I'm wearing a piece of Malawi with me 24/7.

NEW FINDS/ Club Manhattan ring

A while ago - okay, I should be honest, back in July - I received this ring from my dear friend Sander Dekker, whom I've introduced to you before. You can visit his website over here. He's a photographer, and I can say I'm one of his biggest fans - I worked as a stylist for two of his photoshoots a while ago.

Sander also did the photography for a certain brand named 'Club Manhattan'. Club Manhattan is an upcoming jewelry brand, and I have fallen in love with all of the jewelry they have to offer. You should definitely check their website out over here - their pieces have been used by, for example, ELLE, Grazia, Marie Claire, Beau Monde; the list is endless. I'm especially a big fan of their earcuffs and I'm going to get one of these myself asap.

And Sander, sweet as the guy is, sent me this little golden nail-ring as a gift by Club Manhattan. I love it, it's so edgy.

Hi guys! Remember when I took part in the Play&Pose - Charlotte Kan project, just a few weeks before I took off to Africa? I still had a few pictures and videos of that day that I wanted to show you. The picture above was shot by a French street style website 'Treets Look' - this particular website also taped interviews with all of the bloggers, participating in the Play&Pose project. They also made a video that explains a little more about the project in general. You can watch it below here.

Can you introduce yourself?
I'm Charlotte, I'm 19 years old - I live in the south of the Netherlands and I just finished high school after so many years, so I'm happy right now. I'm now taking a year off before going to college. In the coming year, I'm just going to work fulltime and travel for a bit.

What do you write about on your blog?
I write about my personal style, about my opinion on new collections, etc. - but mostly about my own, personal style.

Can you describe your style?
My style is basically girly, but always with an edgy twist. For instance, today I'm wearing a very feminine top, but then again my shoes are pretty edgy.

What are you wearing today?
These are creepers, I just bought them - and I'm in love with them. They're pretty extreme, but I like them. This is a skirt from H&M, from a few collections ago. My shirt was designed by Charlotte Kan, a Dutch designer and I got this necklace from Fashionology. My sunglasses are also from H&M. I got the black ring from a friend of mine, the little silver one from my boyfriend for my graduation, and the big knot from my parents - also for my graduation. And this is a Casio watch.

Do you shop on the internet?
Yeah, a lot. Mostly on eBay. I like to shop vintage most of the time and eBay is a good place for that.

Who is your favourite designer?
My favourite designer is Raf Simons.

1) My boyfriend with some Malawian kids, playing.

3) This was the house owned by the Malawian woman named Ellen (sweetest gal ever), who took care of us - we lived her for a month.

5) One of the first days, this little girl came up to Philou and she wanted to hold his hand for a pretty long time, so sweet.

8) Philippe, one of our neighbour kids - I fell in love with this little boy, he was so adorable. What's in a name by the way, Philou's full name is Philippe as well, ha ha!

For anyone who has ever even thought of maybe doing voluntary work abroad, or even more specific - in Africa; I recommend it to all of you. For the population of that country and for you as well, this can only be a win-win situation. I haven't felt as happy as I was in Malawi for a long, long time...

1) Wayne, a Malawian friend we made, who was also a volunteer for the same organization.

Hi guys! I decided I'm not gonna tell you all of my Africa stories - after all, this is mainly a fashion blog and all of my stories can be read here - this is my travel blog, everything's in Dutch however. Anyway, all I will tell you for now is the following.

In the 19 years of my existence, I have travelled a lot with my parents; they took me throughout the whole of Europe, and I also saw Northern America and Canada from a young age on. The first time I was on a plane, I was 3 months old. They never took me to Africa, though, and I really wanted to see it - I combined it with doing voluntary work, in Malawi to be more precise, during the entire month of August.

This was one of the best choices I ever made in my (so far short) life. I’ve been a spoiled brat for the biggest part of my life, and I’m aware of it, so I was a bit afraid of the lack of sanitary facilities, like a ‘western’ toilet, but surprisingly, I got used to the lifestyle in Malawi 2/3 days. The people and nature made up for everything. I have never met more caring, kind and pure people than the many people I met in Malawi.

I recommend going to Africa, and also working as a volunteer, to everyone who has ever thought of doing something similar. The experience has been life-changing and I will go back to Malawi and other African countries next year, with the boyfriend of course.

The culture shock didn’t come when I went to Malawi - it came when I returned back to Holland. I cannot believe how grey this country is and how sad it makes me to be here. I feel useless, when I realize I can help saving lives in Malawi, while I’m still here, behind my computer, posting pictures on blogspot. Just sitting here already makes me feel like I betray my newly made friends in Malawi. I hope this feeling will become less prominent over the next few days - all I can do right now is save money and wait for next Summer.. Africa, here we come again.

Hi sweethearts, I'm back from a month working as a volunteer in Africa. I'm going to sleep in a bit, and I just wanted to show you some preview photos. I can already tell you that the experience has been life-changing and I'd do it again anytime. I'm back in Holland right now and I cannot believe how grey and sad this country makes me. My biggest wish right now is to go back to Africa, but I think I'll have to wait some time before that is going to happen. In the mean time, I can re-live my adventures by looking at all the photos Philou and I took.

Today is THE day, god, I'm so excited, that my boyfriend and I are taking off to Malawi, Africa to be working as volunteers over there for a month. During this time, I'll have no time/proper access to the internet so I won't be able to keep you updated while I'm there. Once I get back, I will share tons of photos and stories with you. But for now; I'll see you guys in a month, take care.

It is weird that this period of time in my life has come to an end, but I'm excited to see what life will bring for me coming year, starting with my trip to Malawi, Africa, next Thursday!

So I wanted to show you guys what I was wearing when I attended Amsterdam International Fashion Week! I bought these shoes (called 'creepers') last week in a little store in Rotterdam, I am absolutely and utterly in love with them. My dear boyfriend thinks they're disgusting, lol, and my dad even asked me why I was wearing shoes for a disabled person. Ehrm, thanks daddy, love you too. So today was the first and only day I'll visit Amsterdam International Fashion Week this Summer. The reason I'm not attending any more shows is because I need to work a lot and I still need to prepare so much for our trip to Malawi (which I'm overly excited about)! I just arrived back home from Amsterdam actually, and I'm so tired that I can barely keep my eyes open so I'm going to get some sleep, right this minute. Jullie hebben vast wel gehoord van Bibi van der Velden, de bekende, Nederlandse sieraden kunstenares. Enige tijd geleden is ze ambassadeur geworden voor de campagne 'Op Weg Naar Goed Goud', een campagne die in het leven geroepen is door stichting Solidaridad. Bibi wil hiermee mensen bewust maken van het feit dat goudwinning enorme sociale problemen veroorzaakt en schade toebrengt aan het milieu. Ook vindt ze het belangrijk dat goudmijnwerkers krijgen waar ze recht op hebben.

Om die reden ontwierp ze een uniek armbandje dat op deze website (klik) verkrijgbaar is. Het armbandje is unisex, dus voor zowel mannen als voor vrouwen; een mooi en simpel design. Wanneer je het Goed Goud initiatief steunt met tenminste 15 euro, ontvang je dit armbandje. Another edition of the Amsterdam Fashion Week madness is almost starting and I think of myself as the biggest a-hole around right now, since I need to work all week; except for the 15th of July, coming Saturday, when I'll be participating in one of the shows myself (as I already told you). If you haven't heard about the Play&Pose project by designer Charlotte Kan, just scroll down a bit and you'll be able to read all about it.

Payed a visit to Rotterdam with my boyfriend yesterday. Only got myself three items, which is an actual accomplishment for me; the gold Casio watch I'm wearing in the pictures is one of these items, as well as the polkadot dress I picked up at H&M. I'll show you the pair of shoes I bought later on, probably tomorrow morning.

The rings I'm wearing are all gifts; the big buttony one was a gift I received last week from my parents, for my graduation. The one on my middle finger was given to me by my boyfriend, again for my graduation. They're the sweetest.

P.S. I'm aware of the fact there is a hole in my silver sweater. Mourning over it right now.

PERSONAL/ 'My name is Sander Dekker'

One of my dear friends, named Sander Dekker, has organized an exposition in Amsterdam showing part of his work, since he's a photographer. I'm a big fan of his style and up till now, I've had the privilege of working as his stylist twice.

Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, the gallery that is currently showing his work, think the photos are way too vulgar and show too much nakedness. I personally think this is complete bullcrap, there are different types of nudity and I wouldn't dare to call this type of nudity 'vulgar' or even something close to that. Nevertheless, this is a final decision and of course, it causes a lot of people to talk about Sander's work, which is a good thing in the end. Coming Monday will be the last day to visit Sander's exposition.

Even though I haven't had the chance to visit the exposition myself, I know it'll be worth your time, since Sander is an amazingly talented guy. This is mainly for my Dutch readers, but if you're thinking of visiting the gallery, don't hesitate. Here's the address;

Dear readers,

Let me tell you about a certain project I'm particularly excited about (and proud of). In about a week, another edition of Amsterdam International Fashion Week will start (13-17 July). One of the designers showing her collection during this week, is Charlotte Kan. She is a Dutch fashion designer, who has asked her favourite 9 Dutch fashion bloggers to show her collection at Fashion Week in their very own way, instead of using the 'regular models'; in short, the Play&Pose project. In this way, the pieces will be shown in a very versatile way and pictures of the bloggers, including me, will be shot on the spot. These pictures will later on form the lookbook of Charlotte's collection.

These are outfit shots my boyfriend took about two weeks ago, yes, I'm late again!

I just found myself a new job, I'm working as a waitress in a little cafe near the seaside in my hometown. The work's nice and my co-workers are lovely so I really mind going to work, for the first time ever in my life. Only three more weeks till I'm leaving with my boyfriend for Malawi, I am SO excited, can't even put it into words!

PERSONAL/ Voluntary work in Africa, Malawi

First of all, I have probably been the baddest blogger out there with the little amount of updates of the past few months. I promise I will make it up to you guys. First, off to something else way more important.

So it's official. From the 1st of August, until the 26th of August, I'll be doing voluntary work in Malawi, together with my boyfriend Philou, together with the organization 'Be More'.. I cannot even tell you how excited I am. Since I was little, my parents took me on a lot of travels and I have already seen a lot of our planet, but I have never been to Africa till this point. The fact that I'll be able to do something useful over there, makes it a even more special trip. I'm so happy that I will experience the whole trip together with Philou. My boyfriend is 100% African (his roots are in Congo and Sierra Leone), but was born in the Netherlands and this is the first time for him as well that he's going to visit Africa.

Malawi is one of the poorest countries in Africa; about 70 percent of the entire population lives beneath the poverty line. I cannot imagine what the situation over there must be like, and I don't even think it's imaginable. I'll just have to see things for myself, once I get there. For a month, I'll be living in a tiny village with no water facilities, no electricity whatsoever and holes in the earth that will serve as toilets. A few times a week, we'll be sent to another village where we will be writing blogs for the organization 'Be More'. I'm hoping I will also be able to put the parts I've written on this blog, too, but I'm not too sure of that.

I'm hoping that I'll start appreciating things in life more because I have been a spoiled brat for the most part of my life. That might sound a little weird coming from my own mouth, but I know it's the truth, even compared to Dutch standards, and I think a lot about my perspectives of the world will be changed once I'm in Africa. I'll be sure to keep you updated on the whole matter.

A few years ago, my eyes spotted a pair of vintage Ted Lapidus sunglasses for the first time; on Nicole Richie's head, to be more precise. I need a pair of these in my life. I feel like such an asshole for actually buying this since I told myself to only read literature (or just good books) but that is one impossible thing to do for me. I need to get my hands on chick-flicks and girly gal books every once in a while. The Hills + The City are my favourite guilty pleasures, I have all seasons of The Hills on my Mac, it’s terrible. I love Whitney’s eclectic style, so I got this one for myself and Lauren Conrad’s book ‘Style’ for my best friend’s birthday.

By the way, this gif is two weeks old so that's why my hair's still black! My boyfriend shot some outfitpics the other day, which I will make sure to post tomorrow.

Yes, I finally did it and finally had the guts to! I made an appointment at my hairdresser's last Friday and this is how it turned out to be. The picture doesn't really show the way it looks in real life (made with my boyfriend's iPhone), but this is to just give you an impression. It initially was meant to be even a brighter shade of red, but that will be done next time I visit the hairdresser; it would have been too bad for the quality of my hair to bleach it that much in one time.

Shame on me, my sister shot these pictures of me on the 4th of May, which is almost a month ago. I only found the time right now to actually post them. I'm done with all of the final exams, except for mathematics, during which I was sick so I'm gonna have to re-take that one on the 22nd of June. Oh, and NEWSFLASH; I switched my trademark black hair for a shade of red, I'll post a picture later on to show you guys!

By the way, does anyone of you know companies that design lay-outs for blogs? I'm sick of the usual blogger lay-outs, aiming for something special.. Let me know!

Finals are starting coming Monday (beginning with the exam Dutch, which I hope will be peanuts) so I'm eating nerves for breakfast at this very moment. Right now, school is the aspect of my life I'm mainly focussing on and I hope you guys will understand that for the time being. I keep telling myself 'two more weeks, just two more weeks and the finals are over', but at the same time I haven't started realizing that I'm actually going to leave high school. Surreal. I spent 7 years at the place.

I will be working, probably as a waitress, for a couple of weeks after my exams, before I take off to start doing voluntary work in Malawi, Africa for about a month. Yes, it's official, and I'm taking my boyfriend Philou with me, which I'm overly excited about. I will tell you more about all of this later, just wanted to let you know that I hadn't forgotten about you and I'm still alive and kicking. I made these pics with the self-timer on my camera, I know they're not the best quality but there was no one home to shoot some pictures. When it comes to going outside bare-legged, I'm always a bit shy since I'm the biggest dork when it comes to bruises on my legs. I always manage to have at least 6 of them, all the time. A couple of hours ago, I realized that I never got to showing you the final results of the project Adrienne and I have been working on in our senior year at high school!

Hi guys!

So I've been neglecting the blog a bit too much, but there's good news; school's basically finished, and all I can do right now is wait till the final exams start on the 16th of May (eek, only three more weeks!). I can be found at the beach almost every day at the moment - it's right next to my house and I love clearing my mind over here before I start the daily ritual of studying again.

I have quite an exciting announcement to make, at least for myself!

Somewhere coming Summer, after I have graduated from high school, I will go to Africa to do voluntary work with the organisation 'Be More' - I haven't decided which country I'm going to visit yet, but I basically have three options; Malawi, Uganda or South-Africa. It is extremely hard to decide on where to go. I feel like South-Africa is the most developed country of entire Africa, and Malawi and Uganda need all the help they can get more than South-Africa does. On the other hand, I have heard so many positive feedback about South-Africa, but it feels too selfish to make the choice based on this.

Either way, I will keep you updated about the whole matter.

Edit:It is very likely that my boyfriend Philou will come with me, probably to Malawi!

Yesterday I spent a whole day at the beach, together with the boyfriend. He insisted on taking pictures of me and the dogs but I wasn't allowed to take any pics of him (lol). Too bad you cannot see my outfit very clearly, but I was wearing my ballerina dress again, which has become one of my favourite items in the wardrobe.

It is so weird to see myself wearing pants; I actually haven't worn them in about 4 years, apart from some denim leggings. I guess I just feel more comfortable in skirts and dresses. But after seeing these pants at Zara, I felt like giving it a try again. I don't like the color-blocking trend at all, but I do like outfits a bit more subtle with just one crazy color, like these jeans.

My test week went pretty well. Just one more month till the final exams start, I want to get out of this school so badly. Let's hope everything will happen the way planned. Oh, by the way - the project that I talked about in the last post was ended in such a good way, uptil now we've only had good reactions about our spreads that were published in the local newspaper so I'm a happy bunny right now.

Hi guys! I have an announcement so make but I think this one will appeal to my Dutch readers the most.

As most of you know, I've been working on my end project for school with Adrienne, the friend I used to run the blog with. The project consisted out of making a supplement for our local newspaper; the 'Provinciale Zeeuwse Courant'. The supplement was finished yesterday and will be out tomorrow, the 2nd of April, throughout the whole of the province Zeeland. Since my foreign readers naturally cannot buy this newspaper, I'll probably scan everything so you can have a look at it too! Adrienne and I are pretty proud of the final results.

This floral dress remains one of my favourite dresses, but as you can probably see I am in desperate need of a new one, since this one's wearing out. So guys; if you have any tips on where to get myself a new floral dress, please help! I've been into wearing brighter colors a lot lately, must be due to the weather. The rosary was made by my friend's mom, I love the pink beads in between. I'll take a brighter picture later on, since this one doesn't really do the necklace any justice.

NEW BUYS/ Calvin Klein dress

I already got this dress somewhere back in September, while I was visiting New York during the autumn break, with my family. Close to Ground Zero, there was this amazing outlet store of which I now cannot remember the name of.. I'll ask my sister about it, she might remember. Anyway, the shop was selling all of these amazing designer clothes for unbelievable prices. I think this dress was somewhere around $60. Usually I'm not the biggest Calvin Klein fan, but I loved this dress the minute I first saw it.

This dress definitely belongs on my basics list for the 5 Piece French wardrobe project, under the title 'classy white dress'. As soon as I'll have a good opportunity to wear it, I'll shoot some pictures with it.

Edit; my niece gave me the name of the outlet store - Century 21. You should definitely go there when you're visiting NYC.

This weekend, I spent some time at my boyfriend's house. We took a walk on the beach and in the woods, Philou went totally crazy with his photo-edititing-skills on his iPhone so here are some of the results. I think he needs to get an actual good camera since he enjoys taking pics so much! Oh, and in case if you're wondering what these buildings are; they're bunkers from World War II that can be found in the dunes in his hometown.

Did I already mention he's taking me to Paris anytime soon, for my birthday? The trip will probably take place somewhere in May.. Okay guys, hope you had a great weekend, I'm gonna do a bit of homework right now and then get some sleep! Another outfit-post will come up tomorrow.

Showing you the new blouse that I bought at New Look the other day. I love the color, I've been craving for lots of bright-colored pieces of clothing lately, which is pretty funny seen from the fact that I used to wear black all the time, 24/7, even during Spring. Spring is on her way and today, I was able to walk outside without a coat on again. Put a smile on my face! By the way, these boots have become my babies, they're so comfortable and I've been wearing them non-stop since I got them at le Printemps (French department store with all the brands I love).

I'm starting to get a bit sick of my lay-out on the blog, want to make some changes.. Any recommendations? I like to keep it clean and simple, so the updates will stand out more! Let me know. Maybe something more white-ish?

Edit: Due to my fringe, there is hardly any sunlight able to come in, lol. I have an appointment at the hairdresser tomorrow, to get my bangs cut again.
